Red Storm Baseball Announces 2008 Schedule

QUEENS, N.Y. - Head baseball coach Ed Blankmeyer has announced the Red Storm's 2008 schedule. The 55-game schedule features 24 home games including three game sets with BIG EAST opponents Seton Hall, Connecticut, West Virginia and South Florida. St. John's will also play four teams for the first time in school history.
The Red Storm opens the season in Rock Hill, S.C. on February 22 against Gardner Webb as part of the Johnny Gill Memorial Tournament hosted by Winthrop. After a game with the host school, St. John's will play Evansville to conclude the tournament. After a midweek matchup with Winthrop, the Red Storm will then play in the Coca-Cola Classic. Also hosted by Winthrop, the Coca-Cola Classic will pit the Red Storm against Kent State, the hosts and North Carolina before the tournament finals occur on March 2. Games against Gardner Webb, Evansville, Kent State and North Carolina will all mark the first meetings in St. John's history.
The Red Storm will leave South Carolina and head to California for a four-game series against the Matadors of Cal-State Northridge. St. John's then returns to Queens and opens the home schedule with a game against Long Island University on March 12.
Starting on March 14, St. John's will play a trio of non-conference home games against Albany, Fairfield and Sacred Heart on consecutive days. After a game at Fairfield on March 18, the Red Storm opens BIG EAST play with a double-header at Rutgers on March 20. St. John's completes the three-game set against the Scarlet Knights on March 22.
Columbia visits Queens for a game on March 25 before Seton Hall stops over for a three game BIG EAST matchup beginning on March 28. The Red Storm then returns to the road on April 2 for a six game road trip that ends on April 9. St. John's will play a game against NYIT before a three game series with Louisville. Games against Temple and Wagner conclude the trip.
The Connecticut Huskies come to Kaiser Stadium on April 11 for a weekend series before Hofstra arrives for a matchup on April 16. Then six of the squad's next seven games will be on the road with a home game against Princeton sandwiched between three-game sets at Pittsburgh and at Notre Dame.
The Red Storm's next 11 games will be at Kaiser Stadium between April 29 and May 11. NYIT visits to complete the home and home series before Fairleigh Dickinson arrives for a double-header on April 30. After a three-game weekend series against West Virginia, Iona comes to Queens for a double-header before South Florida finishes the homestand with another three-game conference set.
The Red Storm finishes the regular season on the road with three games against Villanova between May 15 and 17. The BIG EAST Tournament begins on May 20.
