QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's soccer players Tara Mendoza and Nicole Pasciolla have been named to the Soccer Buzz All-Northeast second team.
Pasciolla played in 18 games while getting the starting nod in 16. The midfielder finished the season with one goal and two points. The goal she converted on was the game winner in overtime against Sacred Heart on Sept. 7. One of the top playmaking and distributing midfielders in the BIG EAST, this award is the second of the postseason for the sophomore, who was named all-conference honorable mention.
Mendoza picks up her third honor of the postseason, as she was named All-BIG EAST third team and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Northeast Region Third Team. The sophomore played in all 19 games for St. John's, scoring a goal, the first of her career, while tallying two points on the year. The goal was the game-winner over league foe Pittsburgh on Sept. 30, 2007. Anchoring a stingy back line, Mendoza helped lead a defensive unit that posted eight shutouts and a 0.85 goals against average.
The St. John's women's soccer team concluded its 2007 season setting program records with six BIG EAST wins and eight home victories. In addition, the team's 11 wins on the year is tied for the third-most in St. John's history. One of the Red Storm's biggest wins of the season was a 1-0 victory over then-No. 18 UConn. The win against the Huskies was the first for the Red Storm since 1994.
