Storm Tracker
- The Red Storm is 10-6 in all time season openers, with a 12-3 win over Robert Morris last seaseon on Feb. 25.
- St. John???s returns 16 starters and 29 letterman from the 2005 squad, experience is a key factor in this season???s outlook.
- "We have a roster full of guys who have competed in the ECAC for two years, they've played the best teams in the country whether they were ready to or not. Sooner or later that has to work to our advantage. There has got to be a point in time when we take
advantage of that experience,??? said Miller. - The Red Storm was victorious in both scrimmages thus far, scoring 13 goals against Division II???s New York Tech.
- The new coaching staff hopes to use 2007 as a season to earn respect for their program from the inside out."Sure we hope to be more competitive within in the ECAC, sure we hope towin more games; but our focus has to be on the day to day things that will make us better," remarked Miller.
First Season Together
- Fall 2006 saw significant changes to the Red Storm sidelines as former head coach Rick Sowell traveled down the Long Island Expressway to head up the Stony Brook Seawolves. St. John's brought in the expertise of Coach Jason Miller, a former three-year first assistant at the University of Massachusetts.
- With the Minutemen, Miller worked with the defense and face-off units helping lead the team to its first ever NCAA national title game in 2006. During the NCAA semifinal contest last season, the UMass defense held Maryland, one of the nation's strongest offensive teams, to just five goals.
- Miller named Dan Paccione and former Red Storm captain John Kutner as his assistants. Paccione, who will head up the 2007 Red Storm offense, currently plays midfield for Major League Lacrosse's Chicago Machine, while Kutner, a junior college All-American, will direct the defense.
Scouting the Bison
- 2007 is Head Coach Frank Fedorjaka???s second season with the Bison.
- The Bison lost three of their best offensive players, two to graduation (All-American Chris Cara and All-Patriot Leaguer Patrick Christensen) and one to injury (Brian Gargan, ACL).
- Picked to finish fourth in the preseason Patriot League poll behind Navy, Colgate and Army.
- The attack will be led by sophomore Joe Mele, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year. He ranked second in the Patriot League in goals with 26.
- Newcomers Tim Brandau from Baltimore and Austin Winter bring an added size element to the attack unit.
- Nick Marks, Perry Menzies and John Togneri make up the first line midfield. Togneri was one of the league???s top rookies in 2006, scoring 22 pionts on 13 goals and nine assists. He moved from attack to midfield.
- Senior co-captain Paul Stansik leads the defensive midfield with 32 games of experience.
Inexperience In Goal
- The Bison will be breaking in a new goalie as three-year starter Matt Baran graduated in 2006. Look for sophomore Matt Antonelli or UMass transfer Nick Sciubba to guard the net.
Bracket Busters
- Program highlight in 2006: A 7-6 double-overtime upset victory at No. 1 University of Maryland in mid-March. The Bison also knocked off 13th-ranked Penn State on the road and had a satisfying come-from-behind victory at Air Force.
