Foster Receives No. 1 Seed In BIG EAST 500 Finals

Senior Maxcine Foster will represent the Red Storm women's track and field team in the BIG EAST Championship finals on Sunday.
After driving 22 hours to Akron, Ohio, the 10 members of the St. John's track and field team had their work cut out for them.
Foster came away with the top time of the day with a 1:12.97 finish in the 500m dash. Foster's time is .74 seconds away from matching her personal best time of 1:12.23 which she ran in the Metropolitan Championships on Jan. 26. On Sunday, the G.C. Foster transfer will try to beat her personal best and the school best time in the event, which was set by Kaydian Reid last year at the same Championships at 1:11.04.
"Maxcine was great today, and tomorrow hopefully our field events will help earn us some quality points," remarked Head Coach Jim Hurt.
On Sunday, the second day of BIG EAST competition, Kellie Brown will lead off the field events with the triple jump. The day continues with Tetee Kuyateh in the shot put, Venisa Clarke in the high jump, Foster in the 500 final and the 4x400 relay. The Red storm is the defending champion in the relay and are hoping to take home another title from Akron.
In the rest of Saturday's events, Phobay Kutu-Akoi finished 14th overall in the 60m dash with a time of 7.72, her second best career finish. In the 200m dash, Akoi finished 17th overall with a time of 25.31.
Asia Davy represented the freshmen in the 400m dash with a 16th place finish time of 1:00.32, the fifth freshman to finish in the event.
In the first round of the field events,Fayanne Francis finished 11th, missing the finals by .10 meters with a distance of 5.41 meters. Brown finished 13th in the long jump with a distance of 5.31 meters and Kuyateh finished 12th in the weight throw with a distance of 15.49 meters. Dominique Eason finshed right behind Kuyateh with a 13th place throw of 15.27 meters.
Closing out the first day of competition at the University of Akron's Athletic Field House, Louisville and Notre Dame are tied for first place with 26 points.
The championships will conclude on Feb. 18. Day two competition will begin with the men's heptathlon 60m hurdles at 8:30 a.m. Complete results can be found at www.finishtiming.com/Big-East.
