ECAC Honor Roll selection Dan Goldberg marked a career high 23 saves as the Red Storm fell 9-2 to the nationally ranked Drexel Dragons, Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field.
The contest was Goldberg???s second against a ranked opponent and his third double-digit save appearance. The Dragons got off 43 shots, 32 on goal, but Goldberg was able to mute 23 away, allowing just nine to slip by him. Goldberg is now 1-2 in the net for the Red Storm.
The non-conference loss gives the Red Storm a 1-4 record overall, while the No. 20 Dragons advance to 4-1 on the season.
St. John???s came out strong with an early goal attempt by the Michaelsen twins at 11:58 in the first quarter. Tom Michaelsen set up Trevor with an inbounded assist after a wide shot by Justin O???Donnell. Trevor Michaelsen then sent the ball past Drexel goaltender Bruce Bickford for the early 1-0 lead.
The Dragons tied it up with five minutes to go in the quarter with a Mike Filippone goal.
With just under a minute remaining in the first, Colin Ambler took advantage of a Dragon man-up situation to give the Dragons the late-period one goal lead.
After getting down 3-1 in the second, junior Graeme Gillespie brought the game back within one with a feed from Tom Michaelsen.
The Red Storm finished the half down by just one goal against another ranked opponent.
Halfway into the third period, Gillespie made a valiant attempt at a come-back as he went one-on-one with Bickford. A hard shot at the net was blocked by Bickford as the Dragons remained in control of the game.
An unanswered five goal streak in the third period put the Dragons up 8-2 and the Red Storm could not recover.
However, the Red Storm dominated the face-off X in the third period as Dom DeNapoli went 5-5, taking on two different face-off opponents, making him 6-8 on the day, boosting him to 16-34 on the season (.471 percent).
With Tom???s two assists and a goal by Trevor, the Michaelsen twins are tied in points for the season with 11. Gillespie advances his season goal total to four. Gillespie has the highest shots-on-goal percentage as he is 10-for-10 for shots vs. shots on goal.
Penalties were costly for the Red Storm as the Dragons scored on three man-up situations.
Next up, the St. John???s Red Storm returns to DaSilva Memorial for a Tuesday afternoon match-up against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. Face-off is slated for 3 p.m.
