QUEENS, N.Y. ??? The St. John???s men???s golf team has taken the 2007 spring season by storm as both junior co-captain George Zolotas, and the team as a whole, lead the nation in low rounds to date, according to Golfstat. Golfstat, which tracks NCAA Division I, II and III schools throughout the country, released the Low Rounds Poll, Friday, March 16, 2007. In a similar poll released by Golfstat, the Golfstat Cup, Junior Keegan Bradley ranks 39 nationally.
In his opening round of the spring season at the Treasure Coast Classic, March 7, Zolotas shot a personal and program best, 10-under par 61. He broke the Indian Hill???s Golf Course record by three strokes and currently owns the lowest NCAA round to date.
???It was really exciting to break the course record, especially since Keegan and I were going back and forth the whole round,??? said Zolotas. ???With all the great players that have come through St. John???s, it is really cool to have set the school record too.???
Bradley shot a 63 in his first round of the Classic and went on to finish at 21-under par for the three round event. He earned the Treasure Coast Classic Individual Championship title, his third championship crown dating back to the fall of 2006. His spectacular performance on the links has placed him among the nation???s best as he currently sits at 39th.
???Shooting 21-under par at Indian Hills is my personal best,??? said Bradley. ???It was a lot of fun to be out on the course while everyone else was playing so well too. I didn???t make any boagies the entire week so making a bunch of birdies was really exciting.???
As a team, anchored not only by the tremendous play of its captains, but under par rounds by each of its starting five, the Red Storm finished at 40-under par for the tournament. St. John???s carded two rounds at 15-under par while competing at the Classic, both of which lead the nation in low team rounds for the season. The performance is again a program best.
???As a team, we would like to dedicate our performance to our assistant coach Pete Solona,??? said Bradley. ???He has helped us improve dramatically over the past few years. We appreciate everything he has done for us and wouldn???t know what to do without him. He is irreplaceable.???
???The Treasure Coast Classic was a great event for us and we hope to continue this play and make our ultimate goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament,??? said Bradley. ???It is great to see our team improving every day and a lot can be said about our coach Frank Darby who has helped us greatly in getting to where we are.???
???We made a statement as a team and for our school with our performance at the Classic,??? said Zolotas. ???Hopefully it will carry over into our last four tournaments and helps us make it to the NCAA Tournament.???
The Red Storm is gearing up for its third event of the spring, the William and Mary Invitational, which will take place March 26-27 in Williamsburg, Va. For the latest information on the Red Storm golf team and all of St. John???s athletics, please visit www.RedStormSports.com.
