BUFFALO, N.Y. - Kelly McConnell scored a goal and assisted on another as the St. John's women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Vermont on a windy Friday night at the University of Buffalo Classic. At 5-0-0, the Red Storm is off to its best start since the 2004 season and posted its second shutout of the year.
McConnell was the catalyst for the Red Storm offense, gathering a through ball from Erin Bohn in the 21st minute, dodging a defender and beating her with a left-footed shot to give St. John's a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, McConnell sent a cross of her own into the box and found freshman phenom Raelynne Lee, who finished her first touch to score her team-best fourth goal of the season. Lee is the reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Week and has been instant offense for the Red Storm, scoring four goals in the first five games of her collegiate career.
Earning the shutout for St. John's were goalkeepers Jaime Beran and Rebecca Capinera, who split time between the posts for the fifth game in a row. Capinera posted two saves, while the starter Beran was credited with the victory.
The Red Storm out-shot the Catamounts (1-3-1), 15-2, and held a 5-4 advantage for corner kicks.
St. John's received votes in the Sept. 10 National Soccer College Coaches of America (NSCAA)/adidas Top 25 poll and will vie for its sixth-straight victory on Sunday, Sept. 16, when it faces Maine at the University of Buffalo Classic at 10:30 a.m.
