Women's Soccer Opens BIG EAST Play Friday Vs. Syracuse

The St. John's women's soccer team, currently receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll and ranked third in the Northeast region by both the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz Magazine, opens its conference slate this weekend when it hosts Syracuse Friday at 6 p.m. at Belson Stadium. The game kicks off a men's and women's soccer doubleheader (men's soccer vs. West Virginia follows) and can be seen live on the internet . The Red Storm, one of three remaining unbeaten teams in the league, then heads to Manhattan on Sunday, for a 7 p.m. matchup at Columbia.
Youth Soccer Month
• Come celebrate Youth Soccer Month with the Red Storm Friday night. The month is dedicated to increasing awareness of the benefits of playing youth soccer in America. St. John's is proud to support this effort and further the goals of Youth Soccer Month.
Weekend Storylines
• St. John's had two successful outings at the UB Classic last weekend, earning a 2-0 win over Vermont and a double-overtime scoreless tie vs. Maine. With a 5-0-1 record and six-game unbeaten streak, the Red Storm is off to its best start since 2004, when it began the year 6-0-0.
• Tara Mendoza was named to the BIG EAST's Weekly Honor Roll after leading the St. John's defense to back-to-back shutouts for the first time this year. At the UB Classic, Mendoza was named the Defensive Player of the Game for the contest vs. Maine. She was joined by teammates Erin Bohn (Offensive; both games) and Vaila Barsley (Defensive vs. Vermont) as player of the game honorees.
• Goalkeepers Jaime Beran and Rebecca Capinera continue to split time in goal for St. John's. The duo has alternated starting positions and allowed just three opponent goals in six games.
• Syracuse leads the all-time series with St. John's, 7-3-1, but the Red Storm came away with a thrilling double-overtime victory over the Orange last season in Syracuse. The Red Storm lead the series with Columbia, 6-2, and defeated the Lions 1-0 last season at Belson Stadium.

• St. John's is receiving eight votes in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, released Sept. 18, 2007.
• The Red Storm is ranked program-best third in the Northeast Region by the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz Magazine.
A Look At Syracuse
• The Orange have a 3-2-2 record in 2007 and is in the American Division of the BIG EAST.
• Jen Taormina leads the team with seven points (3g, 1a), while Eliza Bennett-Hattan is the reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week.
A Look At Columbia
• Columbia boasts a 4-2-0 record. Allison Leonard and Sophie Reiser lead the team with seven points a piece.
