CHICAGO - The St. John's women's basketball team came close to taking a game from No. 23/22 DePaul on Tuesday night, but could not continue its momentum in overtime and lost 91-80 at McGrath Arena.
The Red Storm battled back from an early deficit in the first half to go into the locker room with a 44-42 lead. After DePaul worked its way back in front in the second frame, St. John's mounted another comeback to lead by two, 77-75, with 20 seconds remaining, but the Blue Demons knotted the score to send the contest into overtime. The third time wasn't the charm for St. John's as it couldn't get anything going in the last period, getting out-scored 14-3.
Four players scored in double figures for St. John's. Junior Kelly McManmon had a career day, setting a personal best with 19 points, 11 of which came in the first half on perfect shooting (3-for-3). She was 6-for-10 from the field, including a 5-for-7 effort from long distance. In addition, the five 3-pointers she made tie for ninth in the Red Storm single-game record books. Freshman Sky Lindsay turned it on after halftime, adding 12 points to her five in the first frame to set a career high with 17. Senior Kia Wright and junior Monique McLean rounded out the double-figure scoring with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
DePaul's offense got off to a quick start and opened up the game going on a 12-4 run. St. John's (10-6, 1-2 BIG EAST) slowly got its offense into rhythm and chipped into the lead using a 9-3 run to come within two, 15-13. DPU's China Threatt took the game into her hands and scored the next five points to put Blue Demons (13-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) ahead by seven.
Both teams traded baskets and the game remained close until Lindsay sparked a run connecting on a three from the baseline at 9:56. The Red Storm then scored four unanswered points to come within one, 25-24. After DPU countered with a basket, Centhya Hart scored on an off-balance layup and, on the next play, fed a pass under the basket to Tiina Sten for a layup, putting St. John's in front for the first time, 28-27.
A back and forth effort ensued the remainder of the half as the lead changed hands four times and the score was knotted twice. With St. John's up by two, DePaul had a chance to tie the score at the end of the half, but Natasha Williams missed a jumper and Recee Mitchell pulled in the board to end the stanza.
DePaul came out of the locker room firing and went on a 13-2 run to take a 55-46 lead to open the second half. Williams and Caprice Smith combined for nine points during the run. The Red Storm edged its way back into the game, coming within five points thanks to consecutive threes by McManmon. St. John's eventually jumped in front thanks to Lindsay. The freshman converted a layup and made the free throw for the and-one play and then hit a three at 7:27 from the baseline to put the score at 68-67. With the score tied at 75-75, McLean nailed a layup to lead by two with 26.7 seconds remaining. After a DePaul timeout, a foul was called on the Red Storm and the Blue Demon's Allie Quigley converted both free throws to send the game into overtime.
The Red Storm will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts West Virginia on Saturday at 2 p.m.
