Storm Surges To 65-46 Win Over LIU

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team got its offense going early and often and cruised to the 65-46 win over LIU on Saturday afternoon at the Wellness Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
With the win, the Red Storm improves to 8-1, while the Blackbirds' record drops to 4-6.
Senior Kelly McManmon had a big outing for St. John's, posting a game-high 17 points. All five baskets she made were 3-pointers, as she was 5-of-7 from downtown and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Her five treys tie her for 10th in the STJ single-game record books, a feat she has accomplished five times. With 85 career 3-pointers made, she entered the top 10 in the Red Storm career record books and ranks ninth.
Both Monique McLean and Da'Shena Stevens each recorded double-figure scoring performances for St. John's. McLean registered her eighth double-digit scoring contest of the season with 13 points, going 5-of-12 from the field, 2-of-4 from 3-point range and 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Stevens had six of her 10 points in the second half to post her sixth double-digit scoring performance of the season on a 5-of-8 effort from the field. The freshman also paced the way in rebounding, tying Centhya Hart for the team high with seven.
The Blackbirds could not match up with the Red Storm offense, as St. John's outshot LIU 51.1 to 35.8 in the game. The Red Storm opened the game strong and only got better, improving from a 50.0 field goal percentage in the first half to a 52.0 effort in the second half. LIU could not find an answer for STJ's 3-point shooting, as the Red Storm connected on 7-of-14 attempts from beyond the arc.
St. John's opened the game by jumping out to the early 10-2 lead with 16:24 remaining. Four different Red Storm players scored during that stretch, with McLean and McManmon each nailing 3-pointers. LIU responded by scoring a quick basket, but STJ bounced back by scoring 11 unanswered points to take its largest lead of the day, 21-4, at 12:24.
The Blackbirds slowly chipped into the lead and managed came within seven, 25-18, by going on a 14-4 run that spanned eight minutes. McLean answered with a jumper and McManmon connected on her third trey of the contest to put STJ in front by double digits, 30-18.
Trailing 32-21 out of the break, LIU came within eight early in the second half, but the Red Storm countered by using a 17-7 run to jump ahead, 51-35, with 11:59 to go and stayed in front the remainder of the way.
St. John's will return home on Tuesday and open a three-game homestand when it welcomes Howard to Carnesecca Arena at 7 p.m.
