Women's Basketball Looks For Seventh-Straight Win

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team concludes its four-game homestand and looks to win its seventh-straight game of the season when it welcomes Monmouth to Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The contest will have a live video and audio broadcast, which will feature a multi-camera setup, a scoreboard and advanced production capabilities. History Lesson
• The contest between St. John's and Monmouth marks the sixth meeting between the two schools. The Red Storm owns the all-time series record with a perfect 5-0 mark, including a 3-0 record at home and a 2-0 slate on the road. The teams met in 1981-82 and 1982-83, then took more than a 20-year break before renewing the rivalry in 2005-06. In last year's meeting, St. John's tied its largest margin of victory over the Hawks with a 71-48 win in West Long Branch, N.J. on Nov. 28, 2007. The previous time STJ defeated Monmouth by 23 points came on Nov. 23, 2005, with a 72-49 win on the road.
Scouting The Hawks
• Monmouth enters the contest with a 4-1 record and is riding a three-game winning streak. The Hawks just won the UTEP Thanksgiving Classic, including posting a come-from-behind win the in championship game against Utah State for the 48-44 victory. The key to the Hawks success this season has been solid shooting from the field and getting to the free throw line. Monmouth is averaging 37.8 percent from the field compared to its opponents' 33.9, and the Hawks have been to the free throw line 47 more times that its competitors this season.
• Senior Jennifer Bender is leading the way for the Hawks and is close to averaging a double-double with 19.4 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per contest. She also paces the way with four blocks and is tied for second with five thefts. Fellow classmate LaKia Barber is second in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.2 ppg and 7.6 rpg. Combined, the tandem is responsible for over half (31.6 ppg) of the team's scoring (52.4).
Undefeated Start To Season
• The Red Storm has opened the season 6-0 for the fourth time in history and the first time since 2005-06. The last time it opened the season perfect through six games, the Red Storm made a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Stat Of The Week
• 54.3: The Red Storm's field goal percentage against Vermont on Sunday, marking the season high for STJ.
