QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team defeated Boston College, 72-63, to capture the St. John's-Chartwells Holiday Classic Championship on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm posted a perfect 2-0 slate in tournament action and improved its overall record to 11-1 on the year. With the loss, the Eagles' record drops to 8-3.
Three St. John's players earned tournament honors, as Kelly McManmon and Joy McCorvey were named to the all-tournament team and Monique McLean was named the most valuable player. Buffalo's Ephesia Holmes, Houston's Courtney Taylor, and Boston College's Carolyn Swords and Mickel Picco nabbed all-tournament honors as well.
The championship game was an all-around team effort, as four Red Storm players scored in double figures, two of which recorded double-doubles. McLean led the team with 22 points (7-of-14) and moved into seventh place on the STJ all-time scoring list with 1,312 points. McManmon had 18 points, including 10 in the first half, going 6-of-10 from the field, 4-of-8 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Freshman Da'Shena Stevens notched her second double-double of the year, leading the team with 11 rebounds, while adding 12 points. McCorvey scored seven second-half points to finish with 10 for the game and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Boston College got off to a quick start and scored six straight points to open the game. McLean quickly hit a three to put STJ on the board and spark a 7-2 run that gave the Red Storm a 10-8 advantage. The Eagles went on their own run to regain the lead, 17-12, at 10:59. St. John's did not stay down for long and went ahead, 28-20, after a 16-3 run. McLean had six points during that stretch.
The Eagles managed to cut the lead down to four, 29-25, when Veronica Wilson scored every point in a 5-1 BC run. After STJ took a 10-point lead, 37-27, the Eagles closed out the half scoring four points to come within six at the break.
McManmon nailed a three to open the second half and gave the Red Storm a nine-point lead, 40-31. After BC came within six at 14:42, McManmon drained another trey and Sky Lindsay nailed a jumper to key a 9-0 STJ run, 57-42.
The Eagles rallied one last time and came within five, 66-61, with 2:59 remaining when Picco made a three, but BC could not come any closer as the Red Storm held on for the win.
St. John's will conclude non-conference action on Dec. 30 when it travels to face Boston University at 2 p.m.
