QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's basketball player Da'Shena Stevens has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week and teammate Monique McLean was named the PrestoSports/Met Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Player of the Week, in addition to earning BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades, as announced by the organizations Monday.
Stevens earns her first-career honor with the Red Storm. Her strong all-around efforts helped lead STJ to a perfect 3-0 record last week and to the St. John's-Chartwells Holiday Classic Championship. The freshman came close to posting a double-double, averaging 11.0 points and 9.3 rebounds. She was the team's third leading scorer, but dominated on the boards to lead the way for the Red Storm.
The 6-1 forward started in every game, recorded two double-digit scoring efforts and two 10-or-more rebounding performances, in addition to posting a team-high six blocks. Against Howard, she connected on 50.0 percent of her attempts from the field and hit six free throws. She led the team with 10 boards and added nine points against Buffalo on Saturday to advance STJ to the tournament championship game, and then helped clinch the title with a 12-point, 11-rebound effort in a 72-63 win over Boston College on Sunday.
McLean garners her first player of the week honor and her second honor roll distinction this season. A huge contributor in the team's perfect 3-0 record last week, she led STJ with 21.7 points per game and shot 53.8 percent from the field on a 21of-39 effort. She was even more effective from 3-point range, connecting on 60.0 percent of her attempts (6-of-10). McLean was named the St. John's-Chartwells Holiday Classic Tournament MVP, leading all players with 24.5 points per game. She also shot 48.3 from the field and 66.7 from 3-point range, in addition to posting a team-high seven assists. In the championship game against BC, she scored 12 of her 22 points in the second half.
The guard became the all-time 3-point record holder at St. John's with 148 in her career, and she moved up three spots in the all-time scoring list last weekend to rank seventh all-time with 1,312 career points.
St. John's is off to an 11-1 start on the season and will conclude non-conference action on Dec. 30 when it travels to face Boston University at 2 p.m.
