Baton Rouge, La. - The Red Storm softball team played its first two games of the 2008 Season at the LSU Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La. St. John's lost its first game to the Lady Mocs of Tennessee-Chattanooga 11-5 and the second game to No. 7/9 LSU 14-0.
"Our inexperience showed today, but it is definitley something that we can take a lot of positives from and learn from," said head Coach Amy Kvilhaug. "We faced tough weather conditions and tough team we want to be like. Our veterans did a great job and we will only get better."
Senior co-captain Lisa Geer pulled double-duty in the first game of the day, relieving freshman starter Kat Lawrence in the first inning. Geer was solid on the mound for the Red Storm, giving up only two hits in five and a third innings, while striking out four. She was equally dangerous at the plate stroking a two-run home run just over the left field foul poll in the fourth inning. The Red Storm made a small comeback in the fourth inning scoring two more runs off a sac-fly from Brandy Reyes and an RBI double from Danielle Estrada, but that is as close as St. John's could get it. Two rain delays totaling one hour in the first two innings of the game made it difficult for either to stay hot.
For Chattanooga, center fielder Tara Tembey and right fielder Laci Upchurch both had three RBI. Eight of the Lady Moc's 11 runs came in the first inning, while the other three were in the fourth. Sophomore pitcher Brooke Loudermilk left the game after the third inning when she was hit in the leg by a live drive off the bat of Kacee Cox.
In the second game of the day, the LSU got on top early and did not look back. LSU scored ten runs in the first inning on just six hits. Lawrence entered the game for the Red Storm in relief of Linzee Sumrall and was able to stymie the bats of the Tigers going four and a third innings and striking out five. LSU's sophomore pitcher Cody Trahan was able to do the same to the St. John's offense all night, ending the game with a one hitter.
St. John's plays tomorrow morning at 11:15 a.m. when they take on the Cardinals of Ball State in the second day of play at the Tiger Classic. The Red Storm's second game of the day is scheduled for 6 p.m. versus Nicholls State. For more information and up-to-date stats on the St. John's softball team visit www.RedStormSports.com
