Baton Rouge, La. - The Red Storm softball team lost two games on Saturday in the second day of play at the Tiger Classic hosted by LSU. St. John's fell to the Cardinals of Ball State in its first game and dropped a tough contest to Nicholls State 8-6.
"It was a great experience for our team to come out to LSU and compete," said head coach Amy Kvilhaug. "This was a learning experience for many of our players and our team will improve from the lessons they have learned here. This group showed their resiliency in the second game and pitched much better."
Versus Ball State, the Red Storm got out to an early lead in the top of the first inning when freshman first baseman Kacee Cox doubled to left field to score Chelsea Durning. Cox would later score in the inning on a wild pitch by Cardinals pitcher Tiffany Garofano. St. John's led after two and half innings but Ball State erupted in the bottom of the third to score ten runs on just three hits and run rule the Red Storm 11-2.
In St. John's second game versus Nicholls State, the Red Storm was able to mount a comeback after being down 6-0 in the second inning. St. John's was able to regroup and score runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In the fourth, pinch-runner Melissa Pilley was able to score on a passed ball and put the Red Storm on the board. Sophomore Shauntaine Harris followed with an RBI single to close the deficit to four. In the fifth, senior co-captain Danielle Estrada added an RBI single of her own and in the sixth, Durning also singled to drive in two and bring the Red Storm within three. Cox continued her great play in this tournament, hitting a solo home in the seventh. Freshman pitcher Chelsea Plimpton had a great outing for St. John's allowing only 2 earned runs in a complete game effort.
For the tournament, three Red Storm players batted above .300. Sophomore catcher Brandy Reyes hit .333 with 3 runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Senior co-captain Lisa Geer also hit .300 with a run, 2 RBI and a home run. Cox has started her rookie year off strong by hitting .308 with 2 runs, 2 RBI, and a home run.
