Box Score: Portland State 3 - St. John's 1
Santa Barbara, Calif - On the first day of the Tournament by the Beach at UC Santa Barbara, the Red Storm fell to the Vikings of Portland State 3-1. Portland State was able to score runs in the first, second and third innings and hold St. John's to just one run on five hits.
"Offensively, we made adjustments, but they came a little too late," said head coach Amy Kvilhaug. "As a younger team, we are getting our feet wet and gaining the experience that we need. Kat Lawrence impressed today and pitched the way she is capable of."
Senior co-captain Lisa Geer gave up just two earned runs, but it proved to be enough to seal a victory for the Vikings. Freshman Lawrence pitched very well in relief, striking out five in four innings. Shortstop Danielle Estrada went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and junior first baseman Roxy Struble hit her first home run of the season in the sixth inning to put the Red Storm on the board.
Even in California, the cold, snowy weather of New York affected St. John's, delaying the flight of starters Alyson Funn and Chelsea Durning, causing them to miss the game. Junior Melissa Pilley and sophomore Ona Halladay got the start for the Red Storm going a combined 2-for-5 with two singles.
St. John's takes on UC Santa Barbara tomorrow at 9 a.m. pacific time. The Red Storm will then take on Portland State in a rematch of today's game at 2 p.m.
