QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team will continue its road trip when it travels to Storrs, Conn., to face the No. 1 UConn Huskies on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 4:26 p.m.
• The game will feature live stats that can be accessed on RedStormSports.com. In addition, the game will be broadcast live on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV). Bob Picozzi will be handling the play-by-play while Meg Culmo will be adding the color analysis.
• St. John's is coming off a 73-63 win over Providence on Feb. 16. The victory snapped the Red Storm's three-game losing streak and improved the squad's record to 13-12, 4-8 BIG EAST. Three players turned in double-figure scoring contests. Monique McLean led all with 23 points for her seventh 20-point outing of the year. Kia Wright added 16 while Tiina Sten chipped in 12. For the first time in two games, the Red Storm managed to hold its opponent below 40 percent, as the Friars shot 35.5 in the contest. In addition, St. John's managed to shoot over 44 percent in the game and had its best showing in three games.
The Series With The Huskies
• The game between the Red Storm and the Huskies is the 50th meeting all-time between the schools. Connecticut has dominated the series and holds the all-time record at 33-16. The Red Storm actually controlled the series at the start, winning 15 of the first 16 meetings until the Huskies took over.
Kia Wright Named To Honor Roll
• Wright has been named to the PrestoSports/Met Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Honor Roll for the week ending Feb. 17.
• Wright had a strong offensive week for St. John's. She averaged 18.0 points per game, tallied eight assists and five steals. She was highly effective with her shooting, averaging 70.0 percent from the floor going 14-of-20. She also averaged 60.0 percent from 3-point range, going 3-for-5.
Close to Hitting 1,000
• With 24 points against Marquette on Feb. 2, McLean reached and surpassed the 900-point plateau. On Feb. 16 against Providence, she scored 23 points to come within seven points of the 1,000 point plateau with 993 for her career. Based on her 15.0 points per game average, she should have no problem achieving the feat in her next contest. When she hits 1,000 for her career, she will become the 16th person in Red Storm history to accomplish the feat.
A Possible Coincidence of Sorts
• Only needing seven points to reach 1,000 for her career and averaging 15 per game this season, McLean should have no problem reaching this milestone against UConn on Saturday. In last year's meeting with the Huskies, fellow teammate Wright scored her 1,000th career point and became the 15th person in St. John's history to accomplish the feat.
