STORRS, Conn. - Three players scored in double figures for the Red Storm, but that wasn't enough to match up with the No. 1 team in the country, as the St. John's women's basketball team fell to UConn, 98-41, on Saturday at Gampel Pavilion.
Kelly McManmon led the way with a team-high 15 points, going 5-of-7 from long range. The junior posted her eighth double-figure scoring contest of the season and her five 3-pointers tied for 10th in the St. John's single-game record books. Senior Tiina Sten and freshman Sky Lindsay each contributed 10 points.
On the defensive side, sophomore Joy McCorvey paced the way with eight rebounds.
The Red Storm (13-13, 4-9 BIG EAST) had to play short-handed in the game because Kia Wright, Nikki Jo Rotolo, Sheree Ledbetter, Charisse Curtis, Kristin Moore and Recee Mitchell were suspended for violating unspecified team policy.
After UConn (26-1, 13-1 BIG EAST) opened up the first half jumping out to a seven-point lead, 10-3, McManmon quickly silenced the Huskies with a 3-point basket from the baseline and Sten followed by hitting consecutive jumpers to tie the score at 10.
The score remained close for the next two minutes and then the Huskies offense opened up and scored 11 unanswered points to pull ahead 24-12. UConn maintained its advantage the rest of the way and eventually jumped out to its largest lead of 25 points with nine seconds to go in the half.
In the second frame, the Huskies offense continued to surge and shot 53.3 percent in the final half. The Red Storm offense could match its counterpart as UConn went on for the win.
The Red Storm will return home on Tuesday to face Seton Hall. Tip-off is slated for 7:05 p.m.
