Women's Tennis Drops Two Non-Conference Matches

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team dropped a pair of non-conference matches to Temple, 4-3, and Penn State, 7-0, this weekend in University Park, Pa. The Red Storm falls to 3-9, while the Owls improve to 12-3 and the Nittany Lions move to 7-6 with the wins.
On Saturday, Temple gained the early advantage by winning the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 spot. In singles play, senior Maria Zivcicova and graduate student Alison Adamski won their matches at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, giving St. John's a much needed push. However, the Red Storm was only able to grab one more point with a win at No. 5 by freshman Jenny Yonkus, and fell short to the Owls by the score of 4-3.
Against the Nittany Lions, the lone winner of the day for the Red Storm was the doubles team of sophomore Ira Aleksova/Zivcicova at No. 2. Penn State won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3, then went on to sweep St. John's in singles play to earn the 7-0 win.
The Red Storm returns to the courts on Thursday, March 27, when the squad takes on Queens College. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Alley Pond Tennis Center.
