QUEENS, N.Y. - Red Storm junior reliever Colin Lynch has been named to the watch list for the 2008 Roger Clemens Award. Originally presented to the top collegiate player and called the R.E. "Bob" Smith Award, the award was renamed for Roger Clemens in 2004 and is given to the top collegiate pitcher. All Division I coaches, selected national baseball media and previous winners are asked to vote for the award.
Lynch is one of 78 pitchers from 24 different Division I conferences to be named on the Clemens Award watch list. The BIG EAST Conference has a total of six players named. The list will be cut down to 10 semifinalists in mid-May and reduced to three in late May or early June. The winner will be selected in mid-June.
Already this season, Lynch has been named to the watch list for the fourth annual NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award presented to the top relief pitcher in the NCAA. The reliever is one of 40 pitchers named to the Stopper of the Year Award watch list.
Lynch is off to a fast start in 2008, as the righty has already recorded three saves in three chances. In 3.0 innings of work Lynch has a 0.00 ERA and has yet to yield a hit, while striking out two batters.
Lynch had a breakout season as a sophomore in 2007. The righty made a team-high 26 appearances, posted a 2-2 record and notched a team-high 11 saves. Lynch had a 2.86 ERA and allowed just a .221 opponent batting average. The reliever also had 34 strikeouts in 34.2 innings of work. Lynch's 11 saves ranked tied for first in the BIG EAST and also placed him 23rd nationally, while his 26 appearances were tied for fifth in the BIG EAST.
Additional players will added to the list as the season progresses, including each player that earns Pitcher of the Week honors from the NCBWA. Keep up with the selection process and find out more about the award at www.clemensaward.com.
