The Red Storm fell to No. 7 Alabama in game two, 7-2
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The St. John's baseball team's historic run drew to a close on Monday in the Tuscaloosa Super Regional. The Red Storm fell to No. 7 Alabama, 7-2, in game two at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
The Johnnies wrap up an impressive 2026 season, where the program won its 10th BIG EAST Regular Season Championship, its record 11th BIG EAST Tournament title and won the NCAA Tournament Tallahassee Regional to advance to Super Regionals for just the second time ever.
The Red Storm played the second game of the Super Regionals over a two-day span, completing seven innings on Sunday. After the contest was suspended action resumed in the top of the eighth inning on Monday morning.
St. John's brought the deficit to one in the bottom of the sixth frame before Alabama's Jason Torres responded with a grand slam in the seventh to extend the Crimson Tide's lead to five that it never relinquished.
Adam Agresti launched his 20th home run of the season becoming just the second player in program history to reach that mark in a single-season joining Jeremy Baltz, who hit a program record 24 homers in 2010. The catcher finished the day batting 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and was hit by a pitch. The Yorktown, N.Y., native recorded a hit in 10 of his final 11 games to end the season.
Jon LeGrande recorded a hit and an RBI during the game two contest. Rob Mansour finished 2-for-3 at the dish with a run scored and Dylan Fitzsimmons delivered a ground rule double, marking his fifth extra-base knock of the postseason.
In his return to Tuscaloosa, Evan Chaffee threw for 6.0 innings posting a line of four strikeouts, no walks and three earned runs. The redshirt junior ended the 2026 campaign with 87 punchouts, three shy of moving into the top-10 all-time in program history and the most since Sean Mooney logged 104 in 2018. Evan Hoeckele provided 2.0 innings of relief work notching three strikeouts when action resumed on Monday.
Chaffee opened game two by taking the Crimson Tide batters down in order, including a pair of strikeouts in the top half of the first.
In the top half of the second Alabama's Torres belted a lead-off stand-up double to start off the frame. The Red Storm went onto retire the next three batters behind stellar defensive plays from the infield to strand the runner in scoring position.
Luke Vaughn led off Alabama with a double to start the frame once again. Peyton Steele drove in Vaughn to put the Crimson Tide on the board, 1-0. With a pair of runners in scoring position and no outs, the Johnnies retired the next three hitters only allowing one additional run on a fielder's choice as Alabama took a 2-0 edge in the middle of the third.
Mansour was the first St. John's player to reach base after a single up the middle. Fitzsimmons then launched a deep drive into center that bounced over the wall for a ground rule double, advancing Mansour to third. LeGrande racked up the RBI off a fielder's choice to put the Johnnies on the board and chop the deficit in half, 2-1, at the end of the third.
Alabama tacked on another run in the fourth off a sacrifice bunt from Vaughn to bring its advantage to two, 3-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Agresti belted his 20th long-ball of the year sending a 408-foot shot over the center field wall to cut the Red Storm deficit to a single run, 3-2.
In the top of the seventh with two outs on the board and the bases loaded, Torres hit a grand slam to right field to propel the Crimson Tide advantage to five, 7-2.
In the top of the eighth inning, the game entered a lightning delay that lasted four and a half hours before the game was ultimately suspended until Monday. When play resumed, Hoeckele took down all three batters in order, logging a pair of punchouts and stranding a runner at third. In the home half of the frame, Shaun McMillan got aboard with a two-out single to right and moved into scoring position after Agresti was plunked in the back. With two on, Alabama's Mathhew Heiberger delivered a strikeout to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Red Storm were retired in order as Alabama clinched its spot in the College World Series for the first time since 1999.
The Red Storm conclude the 2026 season with a 36-26 overall record and a 15-6 mark in BIG EAST play. The 36 wins marks the most in Head Coach Mike Hampton's tenure.
