"I am really excited for Kia," said St. John's head coach Kim Barnes Arico. "She is talented, a hard worker and a team player, and I hope she does well at the camp. She means a lot to me and our program, and we wish her the best with her professional career."
Wright will begin camp with the Liberty on Sunday at the Madison Square Garden Training Center in Greenburgh, N.Y.
The Copiague, N.Y., native, who was initially invited to camp before signing the contract, just finished her senior campaign with the Red Storm, averaging 12.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists. For her efforts, Wright was selected to the All-BIG EAST and All-Met Basketball Writers Association second team. She finished her career at St. John's ranked in 11 career categories, including finishing fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,536 points. In addition, she is the only player in Red Storm history to record more 1,500 points and 400 assists.
The guard helped bring the St. John's women's basketball team to four-straight BIG EAST conference tournaments, two Women's National Invitation appearances and to the Red Storm's first NCAA Tournament berth in over 17 years in 2006. In addition, Wright finished her career at St. John's by helping lead the team to a quarterfinal appearance in the WNIT.
