Women's Tennis Finishes Sixth At BIG EAST Championships

TAMPA, Fla. - Despite a singles win by graduate student Alison Adamski in the last match of her career, the Red Storm women's tennis team wrapped up play at the 2008 BIG EAST Championships Sunday afternoon by falling to fourth-seeded Marquette, 4-1, in the fifth-place match. With the loss, St. John's finished the tournament in sixth place, five spots higher than last year's team.
The match began with the doubles play, which Marquette controlled by taking the first point with 8-4 and 8-1 wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Adamski and her partner, freshman Emily Barnett, were tied 6-6 in their matchup with MU's Lauren Little and Shannon Brown but did not finish after the Golden Eagles clinched the opening point.
Adamski won her singles tilt with Erin Watkins at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-1. Another final-year player for St. John's, senior Ashley Harper, was up one set in her match at the No. 6 spot, but wins by Marquette at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 clinched the match before she could finish. Marquette's girls were in control as each of their victories came in straight sets.
The Red Storm, which suffered injuries earlier in the year and started the season 3-10, rebounded towards the end of its slate to finish 12-12. Led by Head Coach Allison Davidson's guidance and the leadership of Adasmki, Harper and seniors Maria Zivcicova and Mariana Chachua the squad turned the season around with an eight-match winning streak with a true team effort that led the team into the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 7 seed.
