QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's baseball team defeated Princeton for the fifth straight time with a 6-2 win at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Gino Matias was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Paul Karmas was 2-for-4 to record his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the year for St. John's (29-9). Carlos Del Rosario was also 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Red Storm. David Hale had two RBI to pace Princeton (16-21).
Princeton threatened in the top of the first by loading the bases with no outs against Red Storm starter Ryan Cole. The righty, however, struck out the next two batters and induced a ground out to end the threat and keep the Tigers off the board.
Cole would eventually retire nine straight, including six by way of the K, before being lifted in favor of Justin Gutsie.
The Red Storm would then take the lead in the bottom of the third after Del Rosario led off with an infield single. After Del Rosario advanced to second on a wild pitch, Joe Witkowski reached on a fielder's choice as Del Rosario was thrown out at third. Scott Ferrara followed with a single to third, but reached second on an errant throw. Matias then singled through the right side to plate a pair of runs and put St. John's up 2-0.
Gutsie (4-3) would allow a lead off double to Jack Murphy in the fourth. After a groundout moved Murphy to third, another groundout brought Murphy home to put Princeton on the board.
St. John's would respond, though, and go up 3-1 with another run in the fourth. Gil Zayas led off with a single and Chris Anninos walked to give St. John's two on with no outs. Greg Hopkins then laid down a bunt, but pitcher Langford Stuber overthrew third base in an attempt to get the lead runner and Zayas came around to score.
Zayas would then open a three-run sixth for St. John's with a walk. After advancing on a wild pitch, Zayas moved to third on a fly out to center. Hopkins then brought home Zayas with a sacrifice fly. Jeff Granthan would walk to keep the inning alive and Del Rosario followed with a triple off the wall in right center to put St. John's up 5-1. After a walk to Witkowski, Princeton went to the bullpen and brought in David Palms. With Ferrara batting, Witkowski took off to steal second as Del Rosario took off for home. The throw went down to second and both runners were safe as St. John's took a 6-1 lead.
Princeton would come back with a run in the eighth inning off Rich Armento. After Murphy walked to lead off the inning, Spencer Lucian singled. Hale would follow with a single to make it a 6-2 game.
Gutsie struck out four in 2.0 innings of work to earn the win, while Nick Cenatiempo also tallied four strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
