St. John's Volleyball Wins LIU Spring Tourney

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team captured the title in its spring finale at the LIU tournament this Saturday held at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center in Brooklyn. The Red Storm picked up wins over Temple, Hofstra and the host Blackbirds.
St. John's captured the top spot in the tournament by winning each best-of-three matches against its opponents. The Red Storm swept both the Owls and the Pride by the score of 2-0 to start the day. However, the Blackbirds forced a decisive third game for the tournament championship. St. John's held on for the 2-1 win with great play by junior Valeria Kovaleva, who saw time in the setter position, junior Chen Chen in the middle, and fellow classmates Casie Brooks and Lena Yee.
The win concludes the Red Storm's spring campaign and it was a successful one, as the squad won each of the three tournaments on the schedule. Now the team will look forward to what hopes to be another promising season in the fall of 2008.
