QUEENS, N.Y. - The weather may have been cold in New Brunswick, N.J. this afternoon, but the Red Storm women's tennis team continued its hot streak by nabbing its third consecutive win, the second over a conference opponent in three days, a 5-2 victory over the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. St. John's improved to 6-10 overall on the season and evened up its BIG EAST mark at 3-3. Rutgers, meanwhile, had its two-match win streak snapped and fell to 10-7 overall (3-3 BIG EAST).
"Rally" was the theme of the day for the Red Storm, as the team grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the match coming from behind at the No. 1 doubles spot to clinch the point. STJ's pair of Grad student Alison Adamski and freshman Emily Barnett was behind in its match with Katrina Elder-Bush and Katherine Arlak. The duo never gave up and escaped with a 9-7 win in extended play.
In singles, after Rutgers had tied the match at 2-2 with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, St. John's took the lead with a three-set win at No. 6 by freshman Jenny Yonkus, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. For the second time in a week, senior Ashley Harper clinched the match for the Red Storm at the No. 5 spot, winning the fourth point for the team with her come-from-behind three-set win, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, over Rutgers' Christine Tran. Fellow classmate Maria Zivcicova joined in on the rally-party, battling back after losing the first set for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over RU's top-spot senior Elder-Bush.
Sophomore Ira Aleksova was also victorious for St. John's, winning her No. 4 showdown by a 6-2, 6-2 score.
The Red Storm women's tennis team returns to action tomorrow, April 4, when the team takes on the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on the Courts at St. John's.
