QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team continued its remarkable late-season run Tuesday afternoon in Villanova, Pa. by defeating the Wildcats of Villanova University, 7-0. The sweep was the Red Storm's fifth consecutive victory and improved its spring record to 8-10 (4-3 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats fell to 4-11 (1-7 BIG EAST).
The team completed a straight sweep, winning at every single spot in both doubles and singles play. There was only one match that went to three sets and that was at the No. 4 singles spot, where junior Gabija Gasiunaite battled back after dropping the first set to win in an exciting third-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-3, (11-9).
Graduate student Alison Adamski and freshman Jenny Yonkus picked up wins on the bookends of the Red Storm lineup, while senior Ashley Harper continued her hot streak, as she has now won her last four matches. Freshman Emily Barnett and sophomore Ira Aleksova earned the points for St. John's at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.
The women's tennis team returns to action Wednesday on the Courts at St. John's when the squad plays host to Fairleigh Dickinson. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
