QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's soccer players Julianna Cohen and Jeff Stepan were honored at graduation on May 18 with the Outstanding Student Achievement Award. The honor is given out to four graduating seniors who made an outstanding contribution to extracurricular activities at STJ, demonstrated leadership abilities and excelled academically with at least a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
Cohen was a top performer for the women's soccer team during her four-year career. She helped lead STJ to a successful 2007 campaign her senior year, as the team posted an 11-5-3 slate and set records with six BIG EAST wins and eight home victories. She led a stingy defense that posted eight shutouts and a 0.85 goals against average.
Earning a degree in secondary education, Cohen garnered NSCAA Scholar All-East second team accolades and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team honors for recording a 3.92 GPA during her senior year. She was on the Dean's List every semester at STJ, recorded four semesters with a 4.0 GPA and was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma Scholar-Athlete National Honor Society in 2007. She was the treasurer of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was a member of V.I.T.A.L. Athletics. She also participated in various community service activities during her collegiate career.
A senior captain, Stepan was named to the All-BIG EAST second team for his senior campaign. He finished the year tied with a team best four goals and added an assist to tie for the team lead with nine points. Stepan was just one of four players to start all 21 games for the Red Storm, and he anchored a defense that allowed just 0.86 goals per games.
Graduating with a degree in chemistry, Stepan earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team honors for the second straight year, becoming the third St. John's player in school history to earn the honor at least twice. He was a Presidential Scholar, was on the Dean's List every semester at STJ and had a 4.0 GPA for six consecutive semesters. A member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Scholar-Athlete National Honor Society, he garnered Arthur Ashe First Team Sports Scholar honors in 2006 and 2007. On April 25, Stepan received a full scholarship to attend the Washington University School of Medicine.
