St. John's Ties Princeton, 1-1, On ESPNU

PRINCETON, N.J. - The St. John's men's soccer team took an early 1-0 lead before playing to a 1-1 draw against Princeton in double overtime on ESPNU. Adam Himeno scored his third goal of the season to lead St. John's (3-2-7), while Derby Carrillo made six saves. Lester Nare tallied the goal for Princeton (4-5-2) and Sean Lynch made four saves.
"Princeton is a well-coached and well-organized team," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "It was an exciting game and we created some good opportunities right up until the final whistle."
St. John's capitalized on the first scoring chance of the game and took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Himeno in just the 4th minute. Sverre Wegge Gundhus opened the play on the right side before passing forward to Nelson Becerra near the corner of the 18-yard box. Becerra then sent a lead pass up to Himeno who blasted a shot inside the near post from five yards out.
The Tigers had a great chance right after the restart, but Carrillo made a great save coming out of net to stop a Matt Sanner shot.
The Red Storm kept the pressure on as Walter Hines sent a shot on net in the 7th minute, but Lynch made the save.
Princeton had the next chance in the 11th minute as a foul just outside the box gave the Tigers a free kick. Walburn lined up to take the kick, but the St. John's wall deflected the shot past the end line. In the 14th minute Antoine Hoppenot broke free for a chance for the Tigers, but fired off-target.
Himeno had another chance on a header from close range following a corner kick in the 19th minute, but Lynch made the stop.
Carrillo then recovered after coming out of the net to make a great save in the 27th minute on a shot by Manny Sardinha.
Himeno beat two defenders in the 30th minute and took a shot on net, but Lynch made the save and a defender cleared the rebound out of bounds to keep it a 1-0 game.
Following a Princeton turnover St. John's transitioned down the field, but Omar Edwards fired a shot high in the 34th minute. Wegge Gundhus then sent a header just high in the 38th minute after a good pass into the box from David Reed.
A deep throw-in set up a header for the Tigers in the 42nd minute, but Carrillo saved a shot by Ben Harms and St. John's held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Princeton knotted the score at 1-1 in the 50th minute after Sanner and Hoppenot set up a goal for Lester Nare.
After a Max Hare header went wide in the 68th minute, Carrillo saved a header by Hare in the 69th minute to keep the score tied.
A Princeton foul gave St .John's a free kick in the 71st minute, but Lynch was able to tip a shot by Becerra past the end line.
Neither team could capitalize for the remainder of regulation and the game headed to overtime.
Princeton had the first scoring chance in overtime, but Sanner sent a header wide in the 91st minute.
St. John's created a chance in the 96th minute as Bjorn de Hoop sent a pass towards the far post, but it was just out of the reach of Wegge Gundhus and the game went to a second overtime.
Carrillo kept the game tied in the 101st minute with a save on a hard shot from Harms.
The Red Storm earned a header in the 109th minute, but could not capitalize.
In the 110th minute Kyle Hoffer broke through the defense and flicked a quick shot that beat Lynch, but was kept out by a Princeton defender and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
St. John's returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 17, hosting No. 7 Louisville in BIG EAST action.
