St. John's senior forward Joy McCorvey netted 14 points and tied her career high with 15 rebounds to notch her team-leading third double-double of the season. The Red Storm has six double-double performances in 2009-10.
With 15 rebounds against Virginia Tech, McCorvey now has 653 for her career, passing Pat Odom (643) for sixth place on the all-time list. She is nine away from surpassing Sabrina Johnson (661) and cracking the top five.
McCorvey also contributed three steals, one block and one assist, filling up the stat sheet for the fifth time this season.
With Sunday's win over Virginia Tech, the Red Storm improved to 8-0 this season when four or more players score in double digits. Da'Shena Stevens led the way with 15 points, McCorvey and Shenneika Smith each scored 14 and Sky Lindsay chipped in with 12 points.
Stevens grabbed a career-high four steals against the Hokies.
St. John's went to the charity stripe often against the Hokies and made a season-high 21 free throws. The Red Storm's previous season best was 19 at North Carolina on Dec. 6.
Red Storm point guard Nadirah McKenith continues to produce as starting point guard. With five assists against Virginia Tech, the freshman has dished out five or more assists in five straight games and in nine of STJ's 12 games this season.
With the victory over Virginia Tech, the Red Storm has improved to 7-0 this season in games with scheduled starting times of 2 p.m. or earlier. Last season, St. John's was 8-5 in early afternoon contests.
