Women's Basketball Wins Chartwells Holiday Classic Title

QUEENS, N.Y. - Joy McCorvey posted a double-double and three other players reached double figures in scoring as the St. John's women's basketball team defeated Virginia Tech, 75-62, on Sunday afternoon in Carnesecca Arena to win the Chartwells Holiday Classic Championship.
Three Red Storm players earned honors for their play, as they helped STJ post a perfect 2-0 record in tournament action. McCorvey was named the tournament MVP, while Da'Shena Stevens and Shenneika Smith garnered all-tournament honors.
McCorvey had another stellar all-around performance in the game, posting a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. She was perfect from the field, going 5-of-5, and was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. The senior grabbed nine rebounds in the second stanza and finished the game with eight offensive boards and seven defensive boards.
Stevens was the team's leading scorer with 15 points in the win. She finished the game 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-6 from the charity stripe. The sophomore from Stamford, Conn., nearly recorded a double-double with eight rebounds and posted a game- and career-high four steals.
Smith had another strong scoring performance, tying McCorvey as the team's second-leading scorer with 14 points. The freshman was clutch in the second half, scoring eight points. She also added four rebounds.
Sky Lindsay turned it on in the final frame, scoring 10 points in the second half to finish with 12. The junior had a 6-of-13 performance from the field en route to her sixth double-digit scoring game of the season.
The Red Storm (11-1) jumped out to a 10-3 lead to open the game, but Virginia Tech (7-4) responded by scoring three straight baskets to cut the lead to one. After STJ went on an 8-4 run, the Hokies scored six straight points to take their first lead of the game, 19-18. The teams traded baskets until the Red Storm went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line to regain the lead, 26-21.
Leading 31-26, St. John's opened the second half by scoring eight unanswered points to go ahead 39-26. After the Red Storm took a 14-point advantage, the Hokies chipped into the STJ lead, eventually coming within seven, 56-49. The game stayed close until the Red Storm used a 14-6 run to take a 70-53 lead. The Hokies tried to rally but could not match St. John's offensive efforts.
The Red Storm will look to continue its winning streak on Dec. 29 when it travels to face Northeastern at 2 p.m.
