STJ Women's Tennis Edged By Temple, 4-3

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team lost to the Temple Owls, 5-3, on Sunday in a neutral-court matchup at Army's Lichtenberg Tennis Center. With the loss, STJ falls to 1-4 on the season, while the Owls improve to 2-2.
Temple jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping the doubles competition.
With the momentum on their side from the doubles point, the Owls claimed straight-set victories at the No. 1, 3 and 4 singles spots to clinch the match. At the No. 5 spot, sophomore Jenny Yonkus went to a third-set tiebreaker with Temple's Josephine Bergman, and came out on top after Bergman retired, 6-3, 1-6, ret.
The upperclassmen were the bright spots for the Red Storm as junior Ira Aleksova picked up her second-straight win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 singles spot, while senior Gabija Gasiunaite rounded out the Red Storm order with an exciting 6-4, 0-6, (16-14) win at the No. 6 spot.
St. John's returns to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when the squad plays host to Stony Brook. First serve between the Red Storm and Seawolves is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Alley Pond Tennis Center.
