Women's Tennis Falls To Stony Brook, 6-1

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team fell to Stony Brook, 6-1, on Wednesday at the Alley Pond Tennis Center. With the loss, the Red Storm falls to 1-5 on the spring season, while the Seawolves win their first match of the spring and improve to 3-0 overall in 2008-09.
Stony Brook jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping the doubles competition.
In singles play, junior Ira Aleksova earned a straight-set victory over SBU's Katherine Hanson, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Freshmen Joanna Zwirbulis and Nakita Austin went to third set tie-breakers with their opponents at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, but both matches ended the Seawolves way.
STJ returns to the courts on Friday, Feb. 20, when the team travels to face the Princeton Tigers at the Jadwin Gymnasium on the campus of the Ivy League opponent. Doubles competition is set to begin at 11 a.m.
