QUEENS, N.Y. - Five St. John's women's basketball players scored in double figures as the Red Storm got back on the winning track and cruised past Seton Hall, 78-57, on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
With the win, STJ improves to 16-11, 4-10 BIG EAST, while SHU drops to 15-12, 3-11 BIG EAST.
The contest marked the second time this season that five STJ players reached double digits in scoring. Da'Shena Stevens posted a game-high 17 points, going 8-of-12 from the field and 1-of-2 from the free throw line, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Kelly McManmon scored 13 points, going 4-of-9 from the field, 2-of-7 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Centhya Hart matched her career high with 12 points in the contest, going 4-of-5 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 effort in free throws. Sky Lindsay and Joy McCorvey scored 10 apiece. Lindsay, who was 4-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe, led the team and set a new career high with nine rebounds. McCorvey scored eight of her 10 points in the final frame to finish 5-of-6 from the field.
One of the Red Storm's keys to victory was shutting down Seton Hall's Noteisha Womack. For the first time this season Womack was held without a rebound in the game after she entered the contest as the No. 8 rebounder in the nation, averaging 11.3. The Red Storm's offense started strong and only got better throughout the game, shooting a season-high 59.3 percent.
The contest was close at the start. With the score tied at nine, St. John's distanced itself from the Pirates by scoring seven-straight points to take a 16-9 lead. SHU went on a 5-0 run to come within two, but Hart hit a jumper at 8:34 to key a 6-0 run to put STJ in front 22-14. The Red Storm stayed ahead the rest of the frame, eventually taking its largest lead of the half when Stevens nailed a jumper in the paint with 35 seconds left.
The Red Storm maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half. Aricia Mitchell gave STJ its largest advantage of the game when she hit a fade-away jumper at 9:07, putting the Red Storm ahead 64-38. Seton Hall could not come any closer than 21 points, as St. John's defeated the Pirates for the second time this season.
St. John's will close out its regular-season home schedule on Saturday when it hosts Rutgers at 2 p.m. in its Pink Zone game. All money raised by the event will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA fund to help find a cure for breast cancer. The University will also be celebrating its Women In Sports Day and Olympic Gold Medalist Jennie Finch will make a special guest appearance.
