GREENVILLE, N.C. - Junior Tim Morris belted two home runs and had three RBI, but it was not enough as the St. John's baseball team fell to College of Charleston, 8-4. Morris totaled three hits in the game, while Kevin Watkins and Greg Hopkins had two apiece to pace St. John's (2-3). Brandon Sizemore was 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI to lead College of Charleston (4-2).
Morris and Watkins both singled in the top of the first, but St. John's was kept off the board by Tom Schiller (2-0).
In the bottom of the first Brendan Lobban (0-1) issued a one-out walk to Joey Bergman. After striking out Brandon Sizemore, Lobban allowed a two-run home run to Joash Brodin to put the Cougars up 2-0. Mike Hentz immediately followed with a solo home run before Matt Mansilla reached on a bunt single. Mansilla, however, was then caught stealing, 1-3-6, to end the inning.
After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the second, Lobban allowed a single up the middle. For the second-consecutive inning, however, St. John's ended the inning with a 1-3-6 caught stealing.
St. John's made it a 3-1 game with one out in the third after Morris launched a solo home run over the right field fence to put St. John's on the board.
Clay McCord drew a walk to lead off the third and stole second, but advanced to third on an errant throw. After a groundout, McCord came home on an RBI single into center field. Mike Hentz then singled to left field to chase a run home, but was thrown out trying to reach second base and the Cougars led 5-1 through three innings.
After allowing the first batter to reach in the fourth, Lobban was lifted and Stephen Rivera entered the game for St. John's. Rivera allowed a double before retiring Austin Morgan on a ground out. Hutson Dodds then sent a sacrifice fly into right field to plate a run before Rivera ended the frame with the score 6-1.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Brian Kemp reached on an error by the third baseman. Morris then stepped to the plate and blasted his second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot into right center field to make it 6-3.
College of Charleston came right back in the bottom of the fifth as Sizemore homered to left center to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead. Sizemore added another solo shot in the seventh inning.
In the top of the ninth, Hopkins led off the inning with a solo home run to make it an 8-4 game.
The Red Storm's final game in the Keith LeClair Classic, against Oklahoma State, has been rescheduled for 11 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 28.
