QUEENS, N.Y. - Red Storm junior goaltender Gavin Buckley earned ECAC Honor Roll accolades after his 18-save performance at Loyola on Saturday.
Despite a 10-7 loss to the Greyhounds on March 14, the Owings, Md., native matched his career-best save total with 18. At the half, Buckley had saved 12 Greyhound shots, a career record for saves in a half.
Previously, his best half was at Duke on May 4, 2008, when he had 10 at the intermission. His previous career best for saves in a game was also recorded at Duke.
In the final period against Loyola, Buckley saved a point-blank fast break shot by Cooper MacDonnell at 13:21. Buckley's save gave way to a Red Storm clear that turned into a goal by Michaelsen at 11:35 to cut the Greyhound lead to two goals. The junior had a save percentage of .616, a second-best career effort, and also picked up three ground balls in the ECAC match up.
Within the league, Buckley is second in save percentage (.616). He is tied for second in the ECAC in saves per game with Hobart's Max Silberlicht game with 12.20.
St. John's, ranked No. 18 in the USILA Coaches Poll (released on Monday), returns to action to face the Siena Saints on Tuesday in Loudonville, N.Y. Tuesday's game is the Red Storm's first mid-week match up. Face off in the non-conference contest is slated for 3 p.m. on Siena Field.
