QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second-consecutive week, a member of the St. John's men's lacrosse team earned ECAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors. This week, the honor was awarded to senior Drew Schanen for his career-best five goals against visiting Rutgers on Saturday.
Schanen's five-goal effort tied the senior's career-point record, which he had marked earlier in the season with his four goals and one assist in the Red Storm's win against Quinnipiac on Feb. 21. Against Rutgers, the senior attackman scored four of his five goals in the first half. Schanen's third goal of the game, shot top shelf past Scarlet Knights goaltender Billy Olin, helped St. John's regain the lead, 6-5, with 5:57 in the half. The senior scored again, with just over a minute to play in the half, to cut the Red Storm deficit to one to stop Rutgers' three-goal scoring streak. St. John's eventually lost 14-10 in the league contest.
This week's accolade is the second time Schanen has received ECAC weekly honors this season. The North Brunswick, N.J., native earned a spot on the conference's weekly honor roll on Feb. 23, following his previous five-point performance.
After seven weeks of play, Schanen is ranked No. 22 among NCAA Division Lacrosse players in goals per game with 2.25. In the league, Schanen is third in the statistic and is also fifth in points per game with 2.75.
With 22 points on 18 goals and four assists, Schanen leads the team in scoring.
St. John's will travel to Amherst, Mass., for the first of two-straight ECAC away contests. The Red Storm will take on the UMass Minutemen, currently ranked No. 14 in both the USILA Coaches Poll and Inside Lacrosse/Nike Media Poll. Face-off is slated for 1 p.m. on Richard F. Garber Field.
