Track & Field Celebrates Senior Day At Monday Meeting

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's track & field honored its Red Storm seniors, Rakibat Abiola, Venisa Clarke-Lee, Tyneka Greene, Marie Griffiths, Phobay Kutu-Akoi and Paula Rennalls at its annual home meet, Monday Meeting. At the meet, St. John's tallied six event winners, including one BIG EAST and two ECAC qualifying times.
Allie Morbitzer and Brianna Drexler were not in attendance but will also be graduating this May.
The St. John's `A' squad tallied its season-best performance in the 4x100-meter relay; posting its third ECAC qualifying time at 46.42 seconds. The St. John's `A' squad also finished first in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:12.60.
Sophomore Priscilla Frederick earned her third event-win in the high jump with the ECAC qualifying height of 1.70 meters (5 feet, 7 inches). Frederick was the runner-up in the long jump wit a distance of 5.32 meters (17 feet, 5.5 inches). Fellow sophomore Bintou Dibba was third in the event with a distance of 5.30 meters (17 feet, 4.75 inches). Dibba also finished fourth in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.49 meters (4 feet, 11 inches).
Classmate Vanessa Thompson also qualified for postseason competition with a BIG EAST qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles. Thompson crossed the tape at 1:04.33. In the 100-meter hurdles, Thompson was the runner-up with a time of 16.88 seconds.
In the 800-meter run, sophomore Kim Piard was the first place runner out of 29 competitors with a time of 2:21.63. Freshmen Aryon Trujillo and Nicole Cocozza placed fifth and sixth, with times of 2:26.22 and 2:27.06, respectively. Junior Pamela Petruski finished seventh in the same heat, but eighth overall with a time of 2:28.35.
In the field events, freshman Chanel King tallied her first event win of the season with a throw of 12.87 meters (42 feet, 2.75 inches) in the shot put. Courtney Kolinsky also competed in the event with a distance of 8.80 meters (28 feet, 10.5 inches).
Back on the track, sophomore Lauren Wynter finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.25.
Sophomore Shavone Williams placed fourth overall and first in her heat in the 100-meter dash. She crossed the tape at 12.97.
Senior Rakibat Abiola competed in the 2,000-meter steeplechase. The senior finished second with a time of 8:43.57.
Next up, the Red Storm will travel to Rutherford, N.J., for a chance to defend its team title at the Metropolitan Championships. The meet, held at the Overpeck Sports Complex on April 18 will kick off the outdoor championship season for St. John's.
