QUEENS, N.Y. -
As St. John's men's lacrosse looks toward a two-game weekend, senior captain Jamal Jones got together with senior Drew Schanen to answer some of Schanen's questions on the season, pregame rituals and more to help Red Storm fans get to know Jones better.
One of the 2009 tri-captains, Jones is the men's lacrosse team's 'go-to' guy on and off the field. The midfielder acts as the 'true quarterback' on the offensive half of the field and has played in 45 games for St. John's, with 21 starts. He has tallied 18 points on 12 assists and six goals and has only drawn one penalty in four seasons of action. A 2007-08 BIG EAST Academic All-Star, Jones has maintained a 3.03 cumulative GPA in four seasons.
Teammates for three seasons, this year's crop of seniors are a tight knit group who don't mind sharing some mid-season thoughts with Red Storm lacrosse fans or each other.
Drew Schanen: What are you going to take away from your experience on the team?
Jamal Jones: The team camaraderie and just being apart of a team. To be able to work hard, and compete alongside my teammates and friends is a great experience. I know I am going to miss it next year.
DS: Who do you look up to the most on the team and why?
JJ: I look up to our co-captains Matt Viscusi and Dom DeNapoli as much as anyone because of the leadership they show and the hard work they put in and have put in for four years now.
DS: I hear you're a great cook. What is your favorite dish to make?
JJ: I just like to eat, so whatever I make normally tastes good. I'm from Maryland, therefore I would have to say my favorite is crab cakes because 'that's what Maryland does.'
DS: What is your favorite Coach Miller Quote?
JJ: "The hay is in the barn." He says after the last practice before a game. It really gets me ready to go for game day.
DS: What is an unusual thing you do before a game?
JJ: After breakfast I like to get a quick nap in before it is time to go to the locker room. I like to get comfy.
DS: Who makes you laugh the most on the team and why?
JJ: You [Drew] probably make me laugh the most, because you just keep the jokes the coming. A lot of people say we are like Salt and Pepper.
DS: How long does it take you to do your hair and how often do you have to re-do it?
JJ: It takes me quite a while because I do it myself. I like to do it the night before home games. They say you have to look good to play good.
DS: What are your feelings about this two game weekend?
JJ: This is a big weekend for us. We need to get back on track and get a win on Friday. Hobart is a solid team with an identical record so we know it is going to be a fight to the finish, but that's what we want. And Notre Dame is No. 3 in the country so we have to come right back on Sunday and go at it again.
