Red Storm Recognized With AVCA Academic Team Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The St. John's volleyball team has been honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2008-09 Academic Team Award. With a cumulative GPA of 3.30, the Red Storm earned the award for the seventh time. To be considered for AVCA academic team accolades, the squad must carry a 3.30 or higher cumulative grade-point average. More than 400 teams received the honor for the 2008-09 academic year, including a total of 71 NCAA Division I teams.
In 1992-93, the AVCA Team Academic Award was established to recognize and honor high school and college volleyball teams for their excellence on the court and in the classroom. NCAA Division I, II and III men's and women's teams are eligible for this award in addition to NAIA, NCCAA and two-year institutions. Since its inception, more than 2,800 awards have been distributed among these categories.
The Red Storm was previously honored in 1995 (3.48 GPA), 1996 (3.54 GPA), 1997 (3.44 GPA), 1999 (3.30 GPA), 2000 (3.30 GPA) and 2006 (3.45 GPA).
Head coach Joanne Persico and the Red Storm kick off their season on Friday, August 28 at the VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Invitational at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.
