St. John's Continues Road Stretch At Stony Brook

The St. John's volleyball team will spend one more game on the road before returning to Queens. The Red Storm will compete at Stony Brook on Tuesday, Sept. 1 and host its own STJ Classic on Friday and Saturday. STJ leads the all-time series with Stony Brook, 9-1. The last meeting came in 2008, with STJ sweeping the Seawolves, 3-0.

Freshman Gabriela Petkova posted double-doubles against VCU and Temple in her first weekend of collegiate play. Petkova had 28 assists and 10 digs against VCU and followed with 34 helpers and 12 digs against Temple. Senior Ruisa Scheffel led the attack for St. John's with a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs against Temple. Sophomore Jordan Haskins notched the first kill of the season for the Red Storm on Aug. 28 against East Carolina. Haskins recorded six kills in the match, a career-high, and led the team in hitting percentage at .250. STJ owns an 9-1 advantage in the series record, capturing the last six matches. The Seawolves last upset the Red Storm in 2002, taking each of the first four sets to 30 points. St. John's has defeated Stony Brook in each match played outside of Queens.
Scouting The Seawolves
Stony Brook hosts St. John's for their home-opener after competing in the Maryland Invitational this past weekend. The Seawolves are 0-3 entering Tuesday's match after suffering losses to Maryland, Villanova and Youngstown State at the Maryland Invitational this past weekend. SBU finished the 2008 season with a 12-18 record. Stony Brook welcomes five newcomers and returns four starters from last season. Senior Harmonie Calinda led the Seawolves this weekend, recording a double-double in each of their three matches. Calinda registered 20 kills and 21 digs against Maryland in the season-opener, while posting 13 kills and 15 digs against Villanova and 16 kills and 11 digs against Youngstown State.

The Red Storm makes its debut at home on Friday, Sept. 4 at as it hosts the 2009 STJ Classic. The tournament features Quinnipiac, Boston College and Fordham.
