QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's cross country team will host the program's annual Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 17. After a morning of races at Cunningham Park in Queens, N.Y., family, friends and alumni are invited to a luncheon reception honoring Jill Christensen and Bernard Rencher, long-time Department of Athletics employees who retired in 2010.
The day will commence at 9:30 a.m. with a one-mile fun run and walk as a fundraiser for breast cancer research. The men's 5K race begins at 10 a.m., while the women's 4K race will follow immediately afterwards at 10:30 a.m.
The St. John's women's cross country team will take part in the 4K race and an awards ceremony will follow at 11:15 a.m.
"The fall festival weekend is a highlight of our cross country schedule every year," said head coach Jim Hurt. "It gives us the opportunity to raise money for breast cancer research as well as the chance to compete near campus. This year, we get to give thanks to Jill and Bernard for their years of service to our team."
Family, friends and alumni are invited to attend a mass at St. Thomas More Church on campus at 11 a.m. At noon, there will be a brunch reception on the fourth floor of the D'Angelo Center.
The reception will honor the service and dedication of Christensen and Rencher to the St. John's Department of Athletics and the cross country and track & field teams. Christensen served as the team's athletic trainer for many years, while Rencher worked as the team's academic advisor.
The event will also recognize the achievements of cross country alumni Tom Wood '85, Marion Irwin '90, Brian Quinn '95, and Danielle Eckartz `00.
The event fee is $25 per person. For more information or to RSVP, e-mail Assistant Director of Athletic Development for Special Events Liz Austin at austine@stjohns.edu or call 718-990-2548.
