RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Junior captain Chanel King took little time to set the tone for the 2010-11 track & field season, taking first place in the shot put and weight throw at the Manhattan College Opener on Wednesday.
King led a group of four St. John's throwers that participated in the first event of the team's indoor season. Throwing a distance of 16.36 meters in the weight throw, King qualified for both the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. She also qualified for the BIG EAST with a first-place toss of 13.30 meters in the shot put.
King was followed by a trio of freshmen throwers that will look to score points for St. John's throughout the season. Natasha Amazon, a native of New Rochelle, N.Y., placed second in both throwing events, recording a throw of 11.24 meters in the shot put and 14.16 meters in the weight throw. Danette Hinton, from Peachtree City, Ga., came in third, throwing 10.77 meters in the shot put and 12.60 meters in the weight throw. Finally, Gina Frisa notched a distance of 11.61 meters in the weight throw, finishing fifth, and 9.16 meters in the shot put to place seventh.
St. John's will open the season with the full squad at the program's first-ever indoor track & field meet on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The Bill Ward Invitational, named after the school's first track & field coach, will be held at St. Anthony's High School in South Huntington, N.Y.
