QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's lacrosse team will kick off its 2010 campaign with a home bout against Holy Cross this Saturday, Feb. 20 at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, N.Y. The game will begin at 2:30 p.m. eastern time. This season will be the fourth for head coach Jason Miller and marks the 21st lacrosse season in St. John's history.
Saturday's contest marks the first home game at St. John's newly renovated facility, which includes the new D'Angelo Student Center as a backdrop and permanent fan seating along the outside of the track.
Since the program's reinstatement in the 2005 season, St. John's has gone 3-2 in season openers. Saturday's game will mark just the second time in that span that the Red Storm has opened the season at home. The last time was in 2008 when Holy Cross defeated St. John's 7-5.
The game will be broadcast via the internet with live stats, play-by-play and video streaming on the official home of St. John's Athletics, www.RedStormSports.com. Fans can also catch live updates and postgame reaction on the Red Storm's official Twitter site, www.twitter.com/STJ_Lacrosse.
The Series:
• The Red Storm and the Crusaders meet on Saturday for the third consecutive season-opening weekend. St. John's has won two of the last three matchups and leads the overall series 7-1.
• Last season, St. John's defeated Holy Cross 10-5 on Feb. 16, 2009. After leading at the half, 4-3, the Red Storm scored six unanswered goals to break the game open and secure the victory.
• Red Storm underclassmen Harry Kutner and Matt Hurst collectively tallied five points on three goals and two assists. Junior Terence Leach scored one goal while senior Tom Manes notched an assist. Senior Gavin Buckley saved 10 of the 15 shots on goal to earn the 10-5 win.
• For Holy Cross, attacker Edison Parzanese finished with one goal and one assist on a team-high five assists. Colin McGeehin added one goal and one ground ball. Goalkeeper Jimmy Harrison tallied 20 saves while allowing 10 goals.
Scouting the Crusaders:
• The Crusaders were picked to finish seventh in the 2010 Patriot League Preseason Poll as voted on by head coaches and sports information directors from around the league.
• The 2010 squad returns 27 players, including nine starters from last year's 3-12 team. Holy Cross will welcome 10 newcomers to the program this year.
• The Crusaders return their three leading scorers in sophomore Colin McGeehin (21 goals), senior Chris Smirti (18 goals) and senior Kenny Minor (15 goals). The trio accounted for nearly 45 percent of the team's total goal output last season. The Crusaders will also look to the return of Edison Parsoneze who scored eight goals in just three games last year.
• Holy Cross will have to replace their graduated longtime goalkeeper Jimmy Harrison who had a save percentage of over 56 percent last year.
