AMHERST, Mass. - The St. John's women's tennis team held an early lead over UMass on the road, but the Minutewomen came back to win it, 4-3, in nonconference action Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm won the doubles point after a pair of wins from a team of Ece Firat and Jenny Yonkus and Joanna Zwirbulis and Ksenia Mikhaylova before falling in the final two singles matches to move to 1-6 on the season.
Firat won her No. 3 singles pairing over Candynce Boney, 6-4, 6-1 to capture the first singles point for the Red Storm. Yonkus continued, taking the No. 4 matchup in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-4) over Maude Lecluyse.
UMass had won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, but faced a 3-2 deficit heading into the fifth spot. The Minutewomen overcame the Red Storm at No. 5 and No. 6 in straight sets to earn the match victory, 4-3.
St. John's returns to action on Friday, Feb. 26 at Army.
