Mike Ballo Jr. Finishes In Eighth Place At Spring Fling

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - St. John's men's golf senior Mike Ballo Jr. took eighth place on Sunday at the Spring Fling Intercollegiate at Mission Inn Resort & Club's El Campéon Golf Course.
Ballo shot a final-round 75 to finish at 8-over 150 and just five strokes back of individual champion Mark McGuire (3-over 145) of Saint Leo. The Red Storm (631) finished in ninth place, 33 strokes back of tournament winner Saint Leo, which carded a 598. Florida Gulf Coast (601) and Stetson (603) rounded out the top three teams.
Mark Costanza improved on his first-round score by five shots, carding a 78 on Sunday to finish tied for 47th at 161 (+19). Evan Beirne's final-round score of 78 was nine strokes better than his first-round showing and he finished at 165 (+23). Peter Ballo carded an 81 and Jeremy Quinn shot an 84 in the final round as both finished at finish at 163 (+21).
In the women's tournament, Butler took the team title, edging Eastern Illinois by two strokes at 333 (+49). IUPUI's Tara Boone and Butler's Michele Nash tied for the best individual score at 10-over 81.
Rain in the area cancelled Friday's scheduled first rounds of the Spring Fling, so the tournament was changed to a 36-hole format with play on Saturday and Sunday.
The Red Storm next heads to Jacksonville, Ala., to compete in the Grub Mart Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State March 22-23 at Silver Lakes Golf Course.
