QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's student-athletes from various teams spent Thursday afternoon giving back to local children through the Community Mayor program. The program brings children with disabilities from various schools to interact with college students and other groups.
More than 250 children visited the Queens campus on Thursday to take part in soccer drills, pick-up basketball, relay races and other fun, led by St. John's student-athletes. The day consisted of activities at Belson Stadium and Taffner Field House with the volleyball, basketball, softball and soccer teams.
"It was a rewarding experience, interacting with the children," said men's basketball junior D. J. Kennedy. "It is great to give back. I was honored. I hope it meant just as much to them as it did to me. It was very special to me."
Steven Sultan, St. John's alumnus and one of the organizers of the Community Mayor program added, "The teachers and students really enjoyed the day with the athletes. They asked if they could come back tomorrow!"
St. John's student-athletes frequently participate in community service events as part of the University's "Win, Graduate, Serve" mission and Vincentian tradition. For more information on other St. John's Athletics service events, visit RedStormSports's In The Community page.
