St. John's Competes In Penn Relays And Yale Invite

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm track & field team competed at the prestigious Penn Relays and Yale Invite this past weekend.
Freshman Stephanie Barnes and junior Priscilla Frederick both competed in individual events at the Relays on Thursday and Friday. Barnes placed 13th in the triple jump with an outdoor season-best jump of 11.70 meters. Frederick finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.79 meters.
St. John's sported four relay teams over three days at Penn. The team's best performance came in the 4x400-meter relay where Asia Nettles, Kim Piard, Molly Ellis and Lauren Wynter ran a season-best time of 3:50.52.
Rikka Lovely, Ellis, Nettles and Rene Cousins ran in the team's first 4x200-meter race of the season. The foursome finished 27th with a time of 1:39.59. Nettles, Cousins and Lovely joined Vanessa Thompson in the 4x100-meter relay and ran a 47.32.
On Saturday, Sarah Sudbury, Pamela Petruski, Nicole Cocozza and Piard ran an outdoor season-best in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:18.07.
On Sunday, several members of the squad traveled to Yale for the annual Yale Springtime Invitational.
Junior Bintou Dibba took first place in the long jump with a mark of 5.60 meters, qualifying her for the BIG EAST Championships. Senior Fayanne Francis finished fifth at 5.32 meters.
In the other field events, sophomore Chanel King finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 37.08 and also finished second in the shot put at 13.17 meters. Junior Courtney Kolinsky threw 27.54 meters in the disc event and 8.81 in the shot. Junior Diana DeJesus finished 12th in the javelin with a distance of 27.61 meters.
In the running events, Cousins continued her successful weekend by winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 26 seconds flat. Wynter finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.13 seconds.
Junior Sarah Sudbury placed fourth in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:19.61. She was followed by sophomore Nicole Cocozza (2:23.28) and junior Katrina Schaefer (2:35.47). Cocozza placed third in the 3,000-meter race with 10:38.65. Senior Sarah Fry finished 10th with 10:59.20 and Schaefer ran a time of 11:56.38.
Senior Asia Davy led the Red Storm effort in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 11th with 1:08.49. Thompson placed 19th with 1:11.93.
St. John's travels to the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships this weekend which will be held in Cincinnati, Ohio.
