Red Storm Splits Doubleheader Vs. UConn, Wins Series

STORRS, Conn. - Chrissy Montez belted two home runs, Kacee Cox totaled six RBI on the day and the St. John's softball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Connecticut to take the season series.
The Red Storm outslugged the Huskies and survived a late rally in a 9-6 win in Game 2 of the series. In Game 3, Cox hit a three-run homer to tie the game in the third inning, but UConn pulled away with the 6-3 win.
Game 2: ST. JOHN'S 9, CONNECTICUT 6
St. John's took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Chelsea Durning and Amber Curry led off the game with back-to-back walks and advanced on a wild pitch. After Kacee Cox grounded into a fielder's choice with Durning thrown out at home, Chrissy Montez blasted a three-run home run to right center. Kristi Cady followed with an infield single and stole second base. Cady reached third on a passed ball, but St. John's could not plate a fourth run in the first.
STJ starting pitcher Kat Lawrence started the game strong, getting three quick outs with a foul out to second and fly outs to center and left.
Connecticut got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Marissa Guches hit a two-out, solo homer to left.
The Red Storm extended its lead to 4-1 in the third. Leading off the inning, Cox was hit by a pitch and Meghan Gwynn entered as a pinch runner. Gwynn advanced to second on a wild pitch by Connecticut starter Tricia Sullivan. Two outs later, Gwynn advanced to third base on another wild pitch. Shauntaine Harris drew a walk and Gwynn scored from third on another wild pitch.
St. John's banked four runs in the fourth inning. With two outs, Cox singled to the third baseman, scoring Julia Sanchez from third and Durning on a throw to the plate. Montez went yard for in the next at bat, hammering a 1-0 pitch off Ali Adelman for a two-run shot to left. The Red Storm's lead grew to 8-1.
UConn pulled to within 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Huskies third baseman Amy DeLuca hit a three-run homer to left field, plating Julianne Towers and Brittany Duclos.
The Red Storm added another run in the sixth. With one, out, Cox ripped a double off the wall in left center, scoring Curry from first base. Cox moved to third on a single through the left side by Montez. STJ left both runners stranded when Cady grounded into a double play to the pitcher.
The Huskies climbed to within 9-6 in the seventh but St. John's survived UConn's late surge for the win. Jessica McDermott hit a two-run home run to left field with no outs. After Duclos was hit by a pitch, STJ's Linzee Sumrall entered in relief of Lawrence with runners on first and second. DeLuca drew a walk to load the bases in the next at-bat and Justyne Roy popped up to Curry at shortstop for the first out. Cady fielded a running fly out to short center for the second out and Marissa Guches grounded out to Sumrall.
Montez finished 3-of-4 with five RBI and two runs. Cox went 2-of-3 with one double and three RBI. Berger went 2-of-4 from the plate.
Lawrence improved to 7-4 with the win. She struck out three over six innings with six runs allowed. Sumrall earned her first save of the season after throwing a scoreless seventh. Sullivan (3-10) took the loss after allowing four runs over 2.2 innings. Adelman allowed five runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings of work.
GAME 3: UCONN 6, ST. JOHN'S 3
In the final game of the series, UConn took a 3-0 lead in the opening frame. Amy DeLuca drove in Julianne Towers with a double to left field for the first runoff the game. Brittany Duclos scored on Justyne Roy's fielder's choice to third base, putting the Huskies up 2-0. DeLuca plated the third run on a one-out single up the middle by Amy Vaughan.
Kacee Cox blasted a three-run jack in the third off UConn starter Kiki Saveriano to knot the game at 3-3. Julia Sanchez led off the inning and reached on an dropped fly ball by the center fielder. Chelsea Durning followed with a bunt single and Amber Curry advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Cox belted the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center for her sixth home run of the season.
UConn took a 4-3 lead in the fourth when DeLuca hit a two-out single up the middle to score Amanda Martin from second base.
The Huskies' lead grew to 6-3 in the sixth when Towers hit a two-run shot to left center, scoring Jennifer Ward.
Cox finished 1-of-3 with one home run and three RBI. Harris went 2-of-3 in the game.
Sumrall (5-9) took the loss after throwing six innings with six runs allowed (five earned). Kiki Saveriano (7-6) earned the win after striking out eight and tossing seven innings with three runs allowed (two earned). St. John's closes out a 10-game road swing with a doubleheader at Syracuse April 7 starting at 3 p.m.
