STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - After plating a run in each of the first two innings, the St. John's baseball team was held scoreless for the final seven frames in a 5-2 loss to Wagner. Joe Panik was 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Scott Ferrara and Greg Hopkins had an RBI apiece for St. John's (16-10). Eddie Medina, meanwhile, allowed just one run in 3.2 innings of relief. Damian Csakai and Joe Jamison had two RBI apiece to lead Wagner (9-12).
A leadoff walk to Ferrara opened up a one-run first for St. John's. Panik followed by lining a one-out double into left center and Hopkins put the Red Storm on the board with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in center field.
St. John's got things started with two outs in the second inning to add a run and take a 2-0 lead. Matt Wessinger lined a single into right field with two outs and moved to third after an errant pick off throw and a balk. After a Wessinger walk, Ferrara lined an RBI single into center field.
Wagner responded by plating three runs in the third. After consecutive singles by Jon Lucas and Brian Martutartus, Csakai plated two runs with a triple to the wall in left center. Jamison followed with a sacrifice fly as the Seahawks took a 3-2 lead.
Red Storm starter Brendan Lobban (0-1) retired the first two batters in the bottom of the third, but was chased after Martutartus doubled and Csakai walked. Medina entered and allowed an RBI single to Jamison before getting the final out of the inning.
After a one-out double in the fifth, Medina retired eight of the next ten batters. Gaby Ramirez, however, led off the eighth with a one-out double and Medina exited after getting a fly out. Daniel Burawa entered and induced a groundout, but Ramirez moved to third and then scored on a wild pitch.
With St. John's down 5-2 Jimmy Parque doubled inside the first base bag with one out in the ninth and moved to third on a wild pitch before Panik drew a walk to give the Red Storm runners on first and third. David Rees, though, induced a pop up and preserved the win with a strikeout to end the game.
St. John's returns to action on April 9, hosting West Virginia at 3 p.m. in the first game of a three-game BIG EAST series.
